North Caucasus resident planning to join terrorists in Syria detained on Russian-Georgian border

VLADIKAVKAZ. April 13 (Interfax) - Officers of the Federal Security Service's Border Department in North Ossetia have detained a North Caucasian republic resident recruited by ISIL (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) who tried to leave the country via the border with Georgia, the department press service told Interfax.

"A check revealed that the young man planned to leave for Georgia for the purposes of transit to the Syrian Arab Republic via Turkey in order to join ISIL troops. He said he was recruited by an unknown man via a social network and was convinced to go to Syria," the department representative said.

The ISIL recruiter gave the detainee travel instructions, suggested how he should behave en route and provided him with money for reaching Syria.

The young man was transferred to the police of his home town. He is accused of 'engagement in an armed unit' and 'joining an armed unit in the territory of a foreign state for the purposes contradicting Russian interests', the department representative said.
