Moscow draws Seoul's attention to negative impact of plans to deploy U.S. anti-missile systems - Defense Ministry
MOSCOW. April 14 (Interfax) - At a meeting with the Republic of Korea's Ambassador to Russia, Park Ro-byug, Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov expressed concern over plans to deploy the United States' Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems in South Korea.
"The Russian deputy defense minister pointed out the negative impact on the regional military-political situation of the plans to deploy U.S. THAAD anti-ballistic missile systems in the Republic of Korea," the Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson told Interfax on Thursday.
Antonov also stressed the importance of a political diplomatic resolution of the situation on the Korean peninsula in order to prevent tensions in northeast Asia.
The parties also discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula and in the Asia-Pacific Region.
Furthermore, the Russian deputy defense minister shared his views on the situation in Syria and informed the ambassador about the results of the Russian air campaign and the current efforts to demine Palmyra and deliver humanitarian aid to the civilian population.
The parties stressed the need for joint international efforts to counter the terror threat efficiently.
The pair also discussed the current and prospective cooperation between the defense ministries of Russia and the Republic of Korea and possible ways to step up such cooperation.
Antonov also informed the ambassador in detail about key international events organized by the Russian Defense Ministry in 2016: the fifth Moscow conference on international security, the Army-2016 international defense industry forum and the International Army Games. Russia confirmed its invitation for the Republic of Korea military to take part in these forums.
