By signing Paris Agreement, Russia confirms determination to oppose global warming - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. April 22 (Interfax) - The signature by a Russian representative of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which was adopted at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in December 2015, reaffirms Moscow's desire to oppose global warming along with the international community, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

It was reported that Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Khloponin had signed the Paris Agreement on Russia's behalf at the UN Headquarters in New York on Friday.

"This step taken by Russia reaffirms its commitment to the international community's collective objectives on opposing global warming," the ministry said.

The adoption of the Paris Agreement, which consolidates the efforts of developed and developing countries in the same international legal format "provides a reliable framework for a long-lasting settlement of the climate problem," it said.

"We expect the soonest possible launch of a negotiating process under the auspices of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to develop practical rules for implementing the Paris Agreement. This should ensure the provision of the necessary preconditions for the agreement to take effect. We are determined to continue being actively involved in the negotiations, and interact with all countries in the spirit of partnership and collective responsibility," it said.
