Uzbek President Karimov: SCO members must not be involved in military-political processes in Afghanistan

MOSCOW. April 26 (Interfax) - Uzbek President Islam Karimov is categorically opposed to the possibility that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member-states might be involved in military-political processes ongoing in Afghanistan.

Speaking at a press conference following negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, Karimov said: "Taking into consideration the lessons of recent history, it is important in the current complicated conditions in Afghanistan not to allow the SCO's involvement in military-political processes in this country, which could be wrongly perceived not only in Kabul but also far beyond Afghanistan and by virtually all of the international community as the SCO member-states' willingness - and we are both SCO member-states - to take on the full responsibility for settling the crisis in Afghanistan."

"This would be very wrong if someone would like to shoulder the problem of Afghanistan on someone and then retroactively talk about this problem's success or failure. I believe the 'veni, vidi, vici' approach is absolutely impossible in the conditions of Afghanistan," he said.

The participants in the talks also focused on preparations for an upcoming SCO summit, he said.
