Lipetsk region resident sentenced to five years in penal colony for financing Syrian militants

LIPETSK. April 27 (Interfax) - The Moscow District Military Court during a visiting session in Lipetsk delivered a verdict in the case of an individual accused of supporting terrorists, the Lipetsk regional department of the Federal Security Service said.

The defendant is a Lipetsk region resident and a native of Azerbaijan, who ran a business in the territory of the region.

"He had been sending a share of his earnings to his brother, who is fighting in Syria alongside one of the terrorist groups," the report said.

The defendant was sentenced to five years in custody and a fine of 200,000 rubles, the report said.

The criminal case was opened and investigated by the Lipetsk regional department of the Federal Security Service under the article 'Financing of terrorism' of the Russian Criminal Code.
