One killed in gas explosion in Balakovo apartment house, fire put out - Emergency Situations Ministry

SARATOV. May 4 (Interfax) - The fire in an apartment house in Balakovo, in the Saratov region, has been put out; one person is dead, a representative of the Emergency Situations Ministry's regional department working at the scene of fire, has told Interfax.

The firemen found an elderly woman, who was not breathing, in an apartment, he said.

The fire caused serious damage to three apartments on the fourth and fifth floors of the residential building, the ministry representative added.

In turn, the press secretary of the Emergency Situations Ministry's department in the Saratov region, told Interfax that 107 firemen and 16 vehicles, were working at the scene of the fire. Temporary accommodation is being chosen for the fire victims.

A source in the city administration told Interfax earlier, that a gas explosion in an apartment house in Balakovo had killed one person and injured six.

A report, posted on the website of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's Volga regional center, said that a fire on the fourth floor of apartment building No. 2, on Shevchenko Street, was reported at 12:20 p.m. Moscow time. The flames spread into the fifth floor. Firemen and rescuers rushed to the site. The fire was contained in an area of 30 square meters at 1:04 p.m.

Earlier reports, quoting the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry's department in the Saratov region, said that household gas presumably exploded in an apartment building in Balakovo on Wednesday.
