Armenian bill on Karabakh independence may end stalemate at negotiations - Stepanakert
YEREVAN. May 5 (Interfax) - The Armenian government's approval of a bill recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) will have a positive effect on regional peace, and the resumption of negotiations, the NKR presidential press secretary, David Babayan, has said.
"We deem the approval of this bill to be important in the context of peace, and security, in our region. Without playing political games, official Yerevan has sent a message to the world, primarily, to Azerbaijan, that the NKR independence would be recognized if the hostilities resume," Babayan told Interfax.
This step is important for the provision of peace in the region, and "the ending of a stalemate at the negotiations," he said.
"The negotiating process will go on, and this bill will promote reanimation of the talks," Babayan said.
He noted it would be premature to speak about a final recognition of the NKR. "Yet, the process has begun," Babayan said.
