UNESCO delegation in Palmyra to discuss monuments restoration with specialists

PALMYRA, Syria. May 5 (Interfax) - A delegation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) arrived in Palmyra on Thursday for talks with Russian experts and Syrian authorities over restoration of the cultural monuments destroyed by Islamic State terrorists.

The delegation includes permanent representatives to UNESCO from Russia, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, China, Algeria, Serbia, Peru, South Africa, Armenia, Syria and India (respectively Eleonora Mitrofanova, Rudo Mabel Chitiga, Maria Teresa Lazaro, Zhang Xiuqin, Said Khelifi, Darko Tanascovic, Jose Manuel Rodriguez, Sidney Molekane, Vache Vaghranyan, Lamia Shakkour and Ruchira Kamboj).

Earlier on Thursday Russian representative Mitrofanova said that according to experts, restoration or reconstruction of the ancient monuments in Palmyra destroyed by ISIL (a terror group banned in Russia) will take five to seven years.
