Rospotrebnadzor: Zika virus may spread in Russia as vacation season begins
SIMFEROPOL. May 6 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) forecasts a more intense spread of the Zika virus in Russia as the vacation season begins, Rospotrebnadzor head, chief Russian public health official Anna Popova has said.
"The spread will become more intense when the summer season begins," Popova told reporters in Simferopol on Friday.
"There is no environment for the spread [of this virus] in Russia, yet there are still conditions for its importation," the Rospotrebnadzor head stated.
Popova urged Russians travelling to Latin America to be careful about their health.
As of May 5, Russia had confirmed two Ziva virus cases in its territory, with another two suspected cases.
"Two have been diagnosed, and two are suspected - laboratory tests are in progress," Popova said.
