Lack of progress in implementation of Minsk agreements endangers their legitimacy - German foreign minister

BERLIN. May 11 (Interfax) - German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier fears for the future of the Minsk agreements against the backdrop of the ongoing tensions in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine.

"Germany and France have put a great deal of effort into the settlement of this conflict. Although we have made certain progress, the conflict escalates time after time," Steinmeier told reporters before the 'Normandy Four' meeting in Berlin.

The lack of real progress on the Minsk agreements endangers their legitimacy, he said.

"A truce was reached on the Easter holiday and it basically stands; indeed, we would like this truce to last," the minister said.

He said earlier he was expecting to make progress on the timing of Donbas local elections at the 'Normandy format' negotiations in Berlin.
