Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada begins to rename populated localities and districts of Crimea
KYIV. May 12 (Interfax) - The Verkhovna Rada renamed 75 populated localities and districts of Crimea and Sevastopol as a part of the execution of the law on de-communization at a session on Thursday, according to the resolution in favor of which 255 MPs had voted.
Taking into account the recommendations of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, the Verkhovna Rada renamed five districts, one city and several villages in Crimea and Sevastopol.
In particular, the Kirov district of Crimea has been renamed the Islyamterek district, the Krasnoperekopsk district has become the Perekopsk district, and the city of Krasnoperekopsk has been renamed the city of Yani Kapu.
According to the text of the resolution, it comes into effect "at the moment of return of the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea under the general jurisdiction of Ukraine."
More that 90% of participants in the referendum in Crimea voted for its joining Russia on March 16, 2014, and the documents on the accession of Crimea to Russia were signed in Moscow few days afterwards.
