Russia will not get involved in arms race, will follow ready plans to modernize army, fleet - Putin
SOCHI. May 13 (Interfax) - Russia is not going to get involved in the so-called arms race and will walk its own way, continuing the implementation of the plan to modernize the Armed Forces that was made several years ago at the same pace, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"We will not get involved in this race. We will walk our own way. We will work very carefully, without exceeding the plans to finance and modernize the army and the fleet that we already have and that were made several years ago," Putin said at a meeting devoted to the development of the defense sector.
He said he considers the expansion of the U.S. missile defense system in the Mediterranean, Romania and Poland to be attempts to revive the arms race.
"We will adjust these plans [to modernize the army] to reduce the arising security threat to Russia," the president said.
