Georgian ombudsman concerned about level of household violence against women
TBILISI. May 13 (Interfax) - Georgian ombudsman Ucha Nanuashvili is concerned about the problem of household violence against women, which remains acute in Georgia.
"The current situation causes special concerns in terms of violence against women, and the killing of women in Georgia," he said on Friday, during a meeting with representatives from Georgian NGOs.
He said 2,726 facts of household violence were officially registered in 2015.
He said, citing information provided to the ombudsman's office by the Georgian Main Prosecutor's Office, 28 women were killed in Georgia in 2015, of which 16 were killed as a result of household violence.
"We are again faced with such a form of abortion as gender selection. The problem with the prevention of early marriages still remains a taboo. In 2015, 611 marriages involving underage persons were registered. A total of 408 girls, aged from 13 to 17, stopped studying in educational establishments for that reason," the ombudsman said.
