BAKU. May 17 (Interfax) - The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has blamed Armenia for using white phosphorus munitions banned by international protocols in the Karabakh conflict zone and has urged the international community to condemn Yerevan for breaching norms of international law.
"The state of Armenia bears responsibility for illegal actions on the international level. What is more, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry classifies Armenia's violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in the period of the Karabakh conflict as a crime, in line with international criminal law," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on Tuesday.
Employees of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) found a dud 122mm projectile containing white phosphorus (P4) in the village of Askipara in the Terter district on May 10. Another dud 152mm projectile was found in the village of Harahaji in the same district.
ANAMA is sure that the shells were fired from the Armenian side.
David Babayan, press secretary of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR)'s president, told Interfax that the NKR army had never used forbidden weapons in its war against Azerbaijan.
