Eurasian Economic Union, Indonesia to start free trade talks after country files request

SOCHI. May 19 (Interfax) - The official process of discussing the creation of a free trade zone between the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and Indonesia will begin after the country submits such a request, First Deputy Economic Development Minister Alexei Likhachev told reporters on the sidelines of the Russia-ASEAN business forum.

"The process can officially begin only after our Indonesian partners submit the corresponding request to the Eurasian Economic Union," Likhachev said.

An EEU source said that an official request from Indonesia has not been received yet.

President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that he discussed the idea of a free trade zone between the EEU and Indonesia with President Joko Widodo. "We discussed the idea of creating a free trade zone between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union," Putin told reporters after talks with Widodo in Sochi.
