Matviyenko: Karabakh conflict can be resolved only through negotiation
MOSCOW. May 19 (Interfax) - Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko is hoping that Armenia and Azerbaijan will resume dialogue on the Karabakh issue.
"We are hoping that dialogue will now resume," Matviyenko was quoted as saying by the Federation Council press service during a meeting with Ogtay Asadov Sabir oglu, speaker of the Azeri National Assembly, on the sidelines of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, in St. Petersburg on Thursday.
Matviyenko said that there is understanding that there is no military solution to the conflict, and it can only be resolved through negotiation. Matviyenko said the first good signal was the meeting between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Vienna.
"The foundation for further interaction has been laid," she said.
Matviyenko also said Russia gives positive marks to cooperation with Azerbaijan.
"We are strategic partners, we are always near, we have constructive dialogue, we interact on all tracks," the speaker said.
