Eight hundred hectares of land occupied by Azerbaijan in Karabakh may become object of negotiation - Armenian defense minister

YEREVAN. May 23 (Interfax) - The 800 hectares of the territory of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic lost in the aggravation of the situation in April will become an object of negotiation in the conflict settlement, Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan said.

"These territories are outlined in the borders of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and I think they will become an object of negotiations," Ohanyan told reporters on Monday.

He also said the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone is now calm.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan earlier said Armenia had lost 800 hectares in the security zone around Nagorno-Karabakh during the aggravation in the Karabakh conflict zone in April, but that it was more important to preserve people.

"The Armenian forces, which had 800.000 hectares as a security zone, lost 800 hectares. From a strategic viewpoint, these territories play no role; from a psychological viewpoint, the Azeris can convince their people that they have achieved some result," Sargsyan said in an interview with the Armenian media after negotiations in Vienna.
