Montenegro's accession to NATO to negatively impact security situation in Europe - Grushko
MOSCOW. May 24 (Interfax) - Montenegro's accession to NATO will become another dividing line in the Balkans and will negatively impact the security situation in Europe, Russia's Permanent Representative to NATO Alexander Grushko has said.
"This will have an absolutely negative effect," he told reporters during a Brussels-Moscow TV linkup on Tuesday.
"It will be another dividing line in the Balkans," Grushko said.
"The fast-track dragging of Montenegro into NATO, taking place in defiance of the alliance's procedures, indicates that it is a geopolitical project," the diplomat said.
At the same time, when commenting on the prospects of new members, including Georgia, joining NATO, Grushko expressed hope that the alliance "will be governed by common sense."
"Georgia's admission to NATO is a blow to European security, [it represents] colossal risks for peace and security in Europe," the Russian envoy said.
