Admiralty Shipyards launch Kolpino sub under construction for Black Sea Fleet

ST. PETERSBURG. May 31 (Interfax) - Admiralty Shipyards launched the Kolpino, the final submarine of Project 636 constructed for the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy, on Tuesday, an Interfax correspondent reported from the ceremony.

Admiralty Shipyards has already built five diesel-electric submarines of Project 636.3. The subs Novorossiysk, Rostov-on-Don, Stary Oskol and Krasnodar have joined the Black Sea Fleet.

The fifth submarine of the series, the Veliky Novgorod, is preparing for factory sea trials.

In December 2015, the Rostov-on-Don submarine performing an inter-fleet voyage fired Kalibr-PL cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea on Syrian infrastructures of ISIL (terrorist group banned in Russia).

Submarines of Project 636.3 are third-generation vehicles built in furtherance of Projects 636 and 877. They are believed to be one of the least noisy in the world, and the West calls them 'the black hole'. The subs have an underwater speed of 20 knots, a maximum operating depth of 300 meters, a cruising capacity of 45 days, a crew of 52 men, and a submerged displacement of about 4,000 tonnes.

The Kalibr-PL missile systems and modernized radio-electronic hardware are a specific feature of Project 636.3 submarines.
