Aktobe declares 'red' level of terrorist threat

AKTOBE. June 6 (Interfax) - Emergency situations services in Aktobe, the administrative center of Kazakhstan's Aktobe region, have been notifying the local population about an ongoing anti-terrorist operation by means of text messages.

"An anti-terrorist operation is underway in Aktobe; a terrorist threat of the red level has been declared," an Interfax correspondent quoted the text message as saying.

Residents have been urged "to stay indoors and to limit their movement around the city" in an urgent report posted by a news ticker of local television stations.

Internet service is down in Aktobe and cell phone service is intermittent, the Interfax correspondent said. There are few people on the streets, a helicopter is hovering above the city, and public transportation service is limited.

Unknown persons attacked gun stores and a military unit's base in Aktobe on Sunday. Six persons were killed and ten suffered injuries, among them servicemen. Four assailants were killed and seven, including two injured, were detained. An anti-terrorism operation regime was put into place in the city. A number of investigative measures are being taken to detain the other criminals.
