Aleppo's Makani Al-Duwairi neighborhood comes under intense militant fire overnight - Russian center for reconciliation

HMEIMIM (Syria). June 7 (Interfax) - Militants attacked the Makani Al-Duwairi neighborhood in Syria's city of Aleppo overnight into Tuesday, a spokesman for the Russian center for reconciliation of the opposing sides in Syria told reporters.

"Last night, the Makani Al-Duwairi district in the city of Aleppo came under intense fire opened by militants from the direction of the settlement of Kafar Hamra. It was lengthy shelling, which involved multiple-launch rocket systems, cannon artillery, mortars and anti-aircraft guns," the spokesman said.

In the past 24 hours, terrorists have conducted heavy strikes using multiple-launch rocket systems and mortars on the settlement of Handrat, the Al-Nayrab airfield area and Aleppo's neighborhoods of Al-Muhafaza, Meydan, Sheikh Maqsood and Al-Zahraa, he said.

"Even though Ramadan, which is a holy month for all Muslims, began on Monday, terrorists groups are shelling not only positions of government forces and the Kurdish militia, but also residential areas in different districts of the city and its suburbs. The number of casualties among the civilian population continues to rise," the spokesman said.

The Russian center for reconciliation of the opposing sides in Syria said earlier that militants from the Jabhat al-Nusra and Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist organizations (both outlawed in Russia) had taken advantage of the cessation of hostilities declared in May, had regrouped their forces and had launched an offensive starting from last week.
