Azerbaijani President Aliyev accuses Armenia of adding religious tint to Karabakh conflict

BAKU. June 8 (Interfax) - Yerevan is spreading distorted information on the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh among European countries, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

"The Armenian leadership is presenting distorted information on the conflict to the European countries. Along with this, they seek to add a religious tint to the conflict. They have also claimed in most cases that they protect Christian values while surrounded by three Muslim countries," Aliyev said at a meeting with members of the diplomatic missions of Muslim countries on the occasion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The Azerbaijani president described these "cheap and unworthy presentations" by Armenian leaders as a manifestation of "great hypocrisy" and an indication that they view Muslim countries as an enemy.

"You, the people living in Azerbaijan, know very well that there have never been religiously or ethnically motivated conflicts in our country," Aliyev said in addressing the diplomats.

Along with mosques, there are Christian churches and synagogues in Azerbaijan, and the country has allocated funding for repairing an Armenian church, which remains intact in the center of Baku, he said.

It is important for the Muslim world to manifest unity and solidarity on the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh as well as on other issues, Aliyev said.
