Almost 80 hectares of forest destroyed by fire in Far East in past 24 hours

KHABAROVSK. June 10 (Interfax) - Over a dozen wildfires were raging in the Far East over the past day, the press service of the Far Eastern Federal District forestry department said on Friday.

"In all, the district saw five wildfires in the Magadan region, four in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), two in the Kamchatka territory and one each in the Chukchi autonomous region and the Khabarovsk territory," the report said.

The flames spread across 78.8 hectares over the past day, and the heaviest damage was suffered by the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

The fires were fought by 228 men, 18 vehicles and six aircraft.

"As of the night of June 9 to June 10, five fires were put out and three fires continued to burn in the Magadan region, two in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and one each in the Kamchatka and Khabarovsk territories and the Chukchi autonomous region," the report said.

A total of 919 forest fires broke out across 470,400 hectares in the district this wildfire season, which exceeded last year's numbers almost 2.5-fold, the department said. Eight wildfires were detected across 250 hectares in the district on Thursday.
