Ukrainian Prosecutor General Lutsenko: Law on lustration cannot be canceled

KYIV. June 11 (Interfax) - If the Ukrainian Constitutional Court finds the law on the purification of the government bodies (lustration) unconstitutional, the Verkhovna Rada should make amendments to it and should adopt it once again, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko said.

"My position is that an attempt to repeal lustration is an attempt to cancel the revolution's effects. I am deeply convinced that this [lustration] is one of the most efficient ways of purification through civilized procedures instead of possible post-revolutionary excesses," Lutsenko said at a news briefing in Kyiv on Saturday.

He admitted at the same time that the law on lustration requires certain adjustment.

"Therefore, not only should its authors be ringing the tocsin about its possible cancellation, but they should also timely make amendments determined by the Venice Commission. This is precisely what the lawmakers should do," he said.

"I personally don't allow for the possibility of cancelling lustration. If the Constitutional Court decides to repeal it for this or that reason, I am convinced that the parliament, and primarily the faction that I headed until recently [...], will make amendments envisioned by the Venice Commission and pass this legislation once again," he said.
