Flow of harmful pesticides from China growing - Patrushev

CHEBOKSARY. June 14 (Interfax) - Cheap pesticides from China are causing serious damage to the environment in the Volga Federal District of Russia, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said.

"The flow of cheap pesticides and agricultural chemicals from China has grown over previous years. In 2015, more than 13,000 tonnes of poor quality chemicals in the [Volga Federal] district's regions inflicted serious damage to topsoil," Patrushev said at a meeting in Cheboksary on Tuesday.

Industrial waste stores and dumps are also a source of pollution in the Volga Federal District, he said. "The amount of stockpiled waste in the Volga Federal District is 2.5 billion tonnes, and just one third of it is deactivated," Patrushev said.

"Problems of biological wastes in the Nizhny Novgorod and Penza districts and the Mari-El republic are causing particular concern," Patrushev said.
