U.S. missile defense system deployment in Japan to affect security in region negatively - Naryshkin
TOKYO. June 17 (Interfax) - Russia is concerned by plans of the United States to deploy elements of the missile defense system in Japan; this will upset the balance of powers in the region, Russian State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin told reporters in Tokyo on Friday.
"At the latest meeting with the Komeito party leader I made a point of the concern [of the Russian side] at the U.S. plans to deploy elements of their missile defense system in the territory of Japan," Naryshkin said.
"Certainly, if it happens, it will upset the balance of powers in the region and will negatively affect the region's existing security system," he said.
"We would really like for our partners to understand our concern," he said.
