Some 10 children go missing on lake in Karelia

PETROZAVODSK. June 19 (Interfax) - A search operation has been launched after a boat carrying children capsized on Syamozero Lake in the Pryazhin district in Russia's Republic of Karelia, a source in rescue services told Interfax on Sunday.

"The accident occurred on Sunday morning. A boat presumably carrying up to ten underage children overturned," he said.

It is still unknown what has happened to the children, he said. Rescue services are heading to the site.

"There is information, albeit yet unconfirmed, that one girl managed to swim to shore," he said.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's branch for Karelia said in its official report that children vacationing at a children's camp in Syamozero ran into a gale while sailing in two boats and on a raft on the lake on Sunday. Only the raft and one boat returned to the shore. The second boat capsized.
