Children killed in Karelia lake accident wore life jackets - local authorities

SYAMOZERO. June 19 (Interfax) - Everyone killed in the Sunday lake accident in Karelia was wearing a life jacket, Andrei Orekhanov, head of the Essoyla rural community accommodating the children's camp, told Interfax.

"All the victims and survivors were wearing life jackets. They must have spluttered or died from hypothermia," he said.

Orekhanov said he was staying at the accident scene together with police officers.

According to the latest reports, the boat wreck in Karelia's lake killed 11 children and one adult.

The Russian Interior Ministry's department in Karelia told Interfax that the entire personnel of the Pryazha district police force had been alerted.

"Additional forces, police dog handlers and operatives have been assigned to search for the victims and survivors and to establish circumstances of the accident," a department representative said.
