Russia boosts agricultural production 2.6% in May - Rosstat

MOSCOW. June 20 (Interfax) - Russia increased agricultural output 2.6% in May 2016 year-on-year to 327.9 billion rubles, Rosstat reported on Monday.

Growth in May was slightly below the 2.7% year-on-year growth in agricultural output recorded in April.

Agricultural output increased 2.7% to 1.228 trillion rubles in January-May.

Farms of all categories boosted production of livestock and poultry for slaughter (live weight) 7% to 1.1 million tonnes in May and 6.2% to 5.2 million tonnes in January-May.

Milk production edged down 0.5% to 3 million tonnes in May (up 0.5% to 11.9 million tonnes in 5M 2016) and production of eggs rose 1.6% to 3.9 billion in May (3.2% to 17.7 billion).

All categories of agricultural producers had 19.9 million head of cattle as of the end of May (down 2.2% compared with a year earlier), including 8.5 million cows (down 1.9%), as well as 23.2 million hogs (up 7.4%) and 27.3 million sheep and goats (down 1%).

Household farms accounted for 44.9% of the cattle, 16.9% of the hogs and 45.7% of the sheep and goats as of the end of May, compared with 46.1%, 19.1% and 45.8% respectively a year earlier.
