Brexit referendum demonstrates existence of disagreements in EU - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. June 24 (Interfax) - The results of the British referendum have exposed disagreements in the European Union over a whole number of issues, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"They have yet to be assessed, but it is already quite obvious that the referendum results have vividly demonstrated serious disagreements in the EU, differences of opinion on a whole range of key issues, primarily those concerning the extent of integration within the EU," Zakharova said in a commentary published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website on Friday.

"Certainly, a great deal will depend on a decision to be adopted by the British parliament and the government of this country following the referendum," she said.

Moscow views the British referendum, during which the majority of the country's population voted in favor of their country leaving the EU, "as a purely internal issue of this state and the EU," Zakharova said.

"At the same time, we certainly followed the Britons' expression of their will, given its consequences for Europe," she said.
