Nabiullina: no new currency denominations planned after 200-ruble, 2,000-ruble notes
MOSCOW. June 28 (Interfax) - The Central Bank of Russia, which will issue two new banknote denominations - 200 rubles and 2,000 rubles - currently has no plans to further expand the banknote lineup, Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina told journalists.
"We are constantly enhancing security measures for our banknotes, so that they are safe to use. This takes place every five-seven years or so. When we look at the next phase, we may look at the design of the banknotes, but we are not going to add denominations. In our view, with the addition of the 200- and 2,000-ruble banknotes, we will resolve the main tasks here," she said at a press conference devoted to the launch of the process for selecting the depictions on the 200- and 2,000-ruble banknotes.
Nabiullina said the Central Bank is not planning to take 5,000-ruble banknotes out of circulation once the 2,000-rubles banknotes come into use, since the former are "in great demand."
"We do not plan to retire the 5,000 banknotes," she said.
