Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medical and Biological Problems to develop space medicine - Rogozin

TULA. July 1 (Interfax) - Russia will accelerate the development of space medicine, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said.

"We have the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medical and Biological Problems, and we will erect a pyramid of academic science on its basis for [using] the unique groundwork laid by space medicine," Rogozin said at an exhibition, 'Russian Defense Sector - New Opportunities for Medical Industry', on Friday.

This groundwork enables cosmonauts to go on years-long space missions and to maintain normal muscle tone and weight by means of a special diet, the deputy prime minister said.

"It [space medicine] has been a thing in itself until recently," Rogozin said.

According to him, Russia is ahead of the United States in 'sustaining human life' in outer space.
