MOSCOW. July 7 (Interfax) - Seven militants have been neutralized in a counterterrorism operation that left one FSB officer killed and another three injured in Dagestan, Russia's National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) press center told Interfax on Thursday.
"As a result of a series of covert military operations conducted by special forces of the FSB [Federal Security Service] of Russia, seven active members of the so-called Makhachkala gang that have repeatedly committed murders of law-enforcement officers and civilians, as well as other crimes with terrorist dimension, have been neutralized," an employee at the press center told Interfax.
One FSB officer has been killed and another three injured in the clash with the bandits, the employee said. There are no immediate reports of casualties among civilians.
"A great number of weapons and munitions were discovered on the scene of the armed clash, including two grenade launchers, one improvised explosive device, and several grenades," according to the employee.
The counterterrorism operation's active phase continues in the Karabudakhkent district of Dagestan. The operation is aimed to expose and suppress members of gangs operating in Dagestan. The security forces continue to search the mountainous-wooded area around the scene, looking for possible accomplices of the neutralized bandits that may remain in the area, the NAC said.
