Inquiry commission working at Baltic Fleet for two weeks - Western Military District commander

KALININGRAD. July 10 (Interfax-AVN) - A Western Military District (WMD) commission has been working for two weeks now, eliminating flaws exposed on the Baltic Fleet, a spokesperson for the Kaliningrad regional governor said on Friday.

"We have been working for the second week now to eliminate the shortcomings that were exposed during the inspection. The new commander is familiarizing himself straight away with the state of affairs on the Fleet, in units and formations, and necessary decisions are being taken without delay to rectify the situation," WMD Commander Col. Gen. Andrei Kartapolov was quoted by the spokesperson as having said.

The colonel general said he was "firmly confident that with the arrival of Vice Admiral Alexander Nosatov as BF Commander the situation here will change radically."

"Alexander Mikhailovich Nosatov is not an outsider in the Kaliningrad region. For three years, from 2009 to 2012, he led the Baltic naval base. He has excellent knowledge of the situation, the region and its specifics. Until his new appointment, he led the Naval Academy. By order of the Russian Defense Minister, he was admitted to performing the duties of the Fleet commander with subsequent appointment," the WMD commander said when introducing the new BF commander to the governor Nikolai Tsukanov.

It was reported that BF Commander Vice Admiral Viktor Kravchuk, BF chief of staff Vice Admiral Sergei Popov were among 36 admirals and officers sacked by Russian Defense Minister Army Gen. Sergei Shoigu after an inspection exposed serious failings in combat training and misrepresentations of the real state of affairs in reports.
