Forces take control of roads leading to Yerevan
YEREVAN. July 17 (Interfax) - Control has been tightened over the Armenian highways leading to Yerevan, local media reported.
Armed police are checking all vehicles heading to the capital.
Traffic has been closed in the area where an armed group seized a police building in Yerevan's Erebuni district earlier, the main street leading to the building has been blocked by construction equipment , police armored vehicles have been deployed, an Interfax correspondent said.
There were several media reports about evacuation from nearby houses.
The police said earlier they were ready to storm the Yerevan police building seized by opposition supporters.
It was reported that a group of armed people seized the police and internal Troops building in Yerevan's Erebuni District this morning, demanding a release of the coordinator of the Founding Parliament opposition group, Jirair Sefilian, who is held in custody on charges of illegal acquisition and possession of a firearm. One person was reportedly killed and several others wounded in the attack. Several people were taken hostage.
