Doping retests on 30 athletes from 8 countries at 2008 Olympics and 15 athletes from nine countries at 2012 Olympics show positive results - IOC

MOSCOW. July 22 (Interfax) - A second wave of retests of doping samples taken from athletes during the summer Olympics in Bejing in 2008 has revealed 30 positive results, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Friday.

The tests were carried out on samples taken from athletes from eight countries in four sports, the IOC said in a press release.

The reanalysis has shown that 15 samples taken from athletes during the London Olympics in 2012 also contained banned substances. The athletes represented nine countries in two sports.

"For legal reasons, the IOC cannot currently give more detailed information on the cases. This will follow in due course," the IOC spokesperson said.

The retests were carried out only on the Olympic medalists' samples, the IOC said.

The two waves of reanalyses of the samples taken during the Olympics in 2008 and in 2012 revealed 98 positive doping cases. In total, 1,243 samples have been analyzed.

A third and fourth waves of reanalyses are expected to be carried out during and after the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
