Belarusian security services stop another Russian from flying to Istanbul supposedly to join ISIL in Syria - TV
MINSK. July 27 (Interfax) - Belarusian law enforcement officials have prevented a 27-year-old Muscovite suspected of being linked to ISIL, a terrorist group banned in Russia, from flying to Turkey from Minsk, Belarusian television reported.
Belarusian security services had been informed by their Russian counterparts that a Russian citizen planning to join ISIL in Syria was to fly to Istanbul from Minsk airport, the news report said.
"This is not the first such case. Some of them [potential militants] encounter problems flying out of the Russian Federation, and so they come to Belarusian territory to fly from Minsk to Istanbul to further be transported to Syrian territory," a Belarusian Interior Ministry official said in the report.
The young man had undergone special training at a camp for future ISIL members, and his background is currently being scrutinized, the report said.
Immediately after the man was detained in Minsk, Belarusian security services received a letter from Russia confirming his direct links with ISIL, it said.
