Nice terror attack, doping scandal top list of last month's events best remembered by Russians - poll

MOSCOW. July 28 (Interfax) - The events of the last month best remembered by Russians include the Nice terror attack (37%) and the campaign for barring Russian track-and-field athletes and the entire national team from the Rio Games over doping scandals (30%), the Levada Center told Interfax.

The list also features Turkey-related events: the attempted military coup in Turkey (25%), terror attacks in Turkey and Iraq (22%), apologies presented by the Turkish administration for downing the Russian plane (11%) and restoration of relations with/resumption of tours to Turkey (15%).

Some 23% of 1,600 respondents polled in 137 populated localities in 48 regions on July 22-25 mentioned children's deaths in a boating accident in Karelia and 19% spoke about the murder of journalist Pavel Sheremet in Kyiv.

Other subjects mentioned by respondents were rising prices/money depreciation (24%), hostilities in Syria (14%), the UEFA European Championship (15%) and the Monaco scandal involving Russian footballers (10%).

The Brexit referendum was remembered by 7%, and 6% recalled the resignation of British Prime Minister David Cameron and appointment of Theresa May as his successor.

Another 6% mentioned the launch of the State Duma and U.S. presidential election campaigns, and 5% recalled the Day of Memory and Sorrow, extended EU sanctions against Russia, and searches and arrests of the Russian Investigative Committee.

Seven percent declared the significance of the Slavonic Bazaar festival, and 4% recalled the Nashetviye festival. Another 4% mentioned the Day of Russia celebrations on June 12, the arrest of Kirov Regional Governor Nikita Belykh and escalating tensions in Donbas.
