Another two gunmen who occupied Yerevan police premises wounded in shootout - police
YEREVAN. July 29 (Interfax) - Another two members of the armed group that occupied the premises of the police patrol service in Yerevan were injured in a shootout with law enforcement forces on Friday, Armenian police spokesman Ashot Aharonyan said.
"Another two members of the armed group were injured in the exchange of fire with law enforcement forces. They have been receiving medical treatment," Aharonyan wrote on his Facebook page.
Aharonyan told Interfax earlier on Friday that a member of the armed group, Arayik Khandoyan, had been injured in a shootout. ""In failure to comply with the requirements set by law enforcement authorities, shots have just been heard from the territory of the [seized police] regiment. Policemen opened return fire. One of the shooters has been injured, [namely] Arayik Khandoyan," Aharonyan said.
Thus, three gunmen occupying the Yerevan police building have been wounded so far in shootouts today.
Aharonyan revealed on Friday that an exchange of fire started at the besieged premises of the police patrol service regiment. "In spite of the order of the law enforcement agents, the individuals remaining in the territory of the police patrol service regiment from time to time open fire. Law enforcement officers respond with return fire," Aharonyan wrote on his Facebook page.
A group of gunmen took over a police building in Yerevan early on July 17. They killed a policeman and injured four other people in the attack. The radicals demanded the release of Armenian opposition civil movement Founding Parliament coordinator Jirair Sefilian, who is currently under arrest on charges of illegal acquisition and possession of weapons. Members of the armed group have also been demanding that the Armenian leadership resign and a credible government be set up.
Three medics from an ambulance crew, including a nurse, are still being held hostage in the occupied premises of the police regiment.
