Russian-U.S. relations not to reach new level, if Clinton wins at presidential elections - Naryshkin

SEVEROMORSK. July 31 (Interfax) - The election of candidate from the Democratic Party Hillary Clinton as president of the United States will not allow bringing U.S.-Russian relations to a new level, State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin said.

"If looking back at the past eight years, when representative of the Democratic Party Barack Obama was in power, over these years, unfortunately, no warming in the relations between the countries has taken place, no steps to meet each other halfway have been made that could point to a higher level of trust," Naryshkin said at a meeting with the officers of the Adm. of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser.

Clinton's election program does not differ from what had happened over the past eight years, he said. "Therefore, one should not expect something that may bring the relations to a new level," Naryshkin said.

Besides, it is still early to judge about the relations between the two countries if Republican candidate Donald Trump is elected president, because the provisions of his program in the area of bilateral relations "are vague and slightly confused."

"No matter what candidate is like, we will hold our ground, protect our security, a just world order, we have everything for this," he also said.

The parliament speaker said that he could not name a candidate, who would be preferable for Russia, because this would entail accusations of lobbying and pressure on U.S. electors.
