Majority of older generation in Georgia wants better relations with Russia - Burjanadze

TBILISI. Aug 1 (Interfax) - Leader of the Democratic Movement - United Georgia opposition party and former Georgian parliament speaker Nino Burjanadze spoke against casting aspersions on people of the older generation in Georgia, in particular, that they allegedly long for the Soviet Union and therefore largely favor the improvement of relations with Russia.

Many members of the older generation favor the improvement of relations with Russia but "not because they remember the Soviet Union and long for it," Burjanadze said on Channel 2 of the Georgian public broadcaster, according to the party's press service.

This is the generation that brought independence to Georgia, she said.

"Possibly a few miss the Soviet Union but the majority of the older generation favors the improvement of relations with Russia not because they miss the USSR but because this generation has actual experience. They look at Georgia's problems with a cool head and a wise view," Burjanadze said.
