Chief of police for Yerevan district where police regiment was seized fired

YEREVAN. Aug 3 (Interfax) - The chief of police for the Erebuni district where an armed grouping had seized the building of a patrol guard police regiment has been fired, an Armenian police spokesperson told Interfax on Wednesday.

"By order of the Armenian police chief, Vladimir Gasparyan, Erebuni district police chief Gevorg Akopyan has been removed from office and replaced by Grisha Amirkhanyan," the police said.

In the morning of July 17, a group of gunmen calling themselves the Sasna Tsrer (Daredevils of Sassoun), attacked and took over the grounds of a police patrol guard regiment in Yerevan. They killed one policeman and injured another four people during the attack. The radicals demanded the release of Zhirayr Sefilian, the coordinator of the civic opposition initiative 'Founding Parliament', who is held under arrest on charges of illegal acquisition and storage of weapons. Members of the armed group also demanded that the Armenian president and government resign and a credible government be set up. They surrendered late on July 31.
