Russian Embassy finding out whether Russian citizen was aboard helicopter that crash-landed in Afghanistan - press attache

MOSCOW. Aug 4 (Interfax) - The Russian Embassy in Kabul is verifying reports that a Russian citizen was aboard a Pakistan helicopter which crash-landed in a Taliban-controlled area of Afghanistan.

"The embassy's consular section is working to clarify whether a Russian citizen was in fact aboard the Pakistani helicopter," the embassy's press attache Alexei Kosarev told Interfax.

The Afghan authorities have yet to provide official data over the incident, he said.

The helicopter, owned by the authorities of the Pakistan province of Punjab, made a crash landing in the Afghan border province of Logar, in a mountainous areas controlled by the Taliban, according to the website of the Lebanese news outlet Daily Star.

The fate of the passengers and crew is still unknown.

A spokesman for the Logar authorities said the helicopter was not shot from the ground but landed because of a technical fault. There were several media reports of a Russian engineer aboard the helicopter.
