Terrorism can only be countered collectively - Putin

MOSCOW. Aug 5 (Interfax) - Terrorism should be fought collectively on the basis of the norms and principles of international law, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"The recent terrorist attacks carried out in different regions of the world show once again that terrorism can only be fought collectively, on the basis of the norms and principles of international law with the coordinating role of the UN," Putin said in an interview with the Azeri state information agency Azertag.

"There should be no double standards here, one cannot divide terrorists into good and bad and, of course, it is unacceptable and extremely dangerous to try to use terrorist and radical extremist groups in political and geopolitical interests," Putin said.

"We are most certainly concerned about two hotbeds of instability, in Afghanistan and in the Middle East, that are situated in the immediate vicinity of the Russian, Azerbaijani and Iranian borders. They pose a grave threat of international terrorism and cross-border crime primarily due to the increased drug flow, arms trafficking and movement of fighters," Putin said.
