Twelve people injured in recent disturbances in Yerevan remain hospitalized - Armenian Health Ministry
YEREVAN. Aug 6 (Interfax) - Twelve people who were injured in disturbances involving the seizure of a police station in Yerevan by a group of armed radicals are remaining in hospitals, Armenian Health Ministry press secretary Anait Aitayan told Interfax.
"Twelve casualties are remaining in hospitals, including two policemen and two journalists," Aitayan said.
It was reported earlier that a group of gunmen calling themselves the Sasna Tsrer (Daredevils of Sassoun) attacked and seized the headquarters of a district police station in Yerevan. They killed one policeman, and four other people were injured during the attack. The radicals demanded the release of Jirair Sefilian, a coordinator of the civic opposition initiative 'Constituent Parliament', who has been held under arrest on charges of illegal acquisition and storage of weapons.
The attackers also demanded the Armenian leadership's resignation and the formation of a credible government. They surrendered on the evening of July 31.
All this time, the armed group's supporters were holding rallies.
On July 29, the opposition rally in Yerevan grew into a procession toward the seized police station. Several hundred demonstrators broke through a police cordon in an attempt to approach the police building. Police had to carry out a large-scale operation to disperse the demonstrators.
