U.S. citizen killed in Georgia, suspect detained

TBILISI. Aug 13 (Interfax) - Georgian law enforcement agencies have detained a person suspected of killing a 41-year-old U.S. citizen whose body was earlier found on a road near the village of Lechuri, the Telavi district in the Kakheti region.

The investigation has determined that the suspect, born in 1996, had attacked the American with a knife following a verbal altercation, the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

The U.S. citizen, born in 1975, died on the spot, and the attacker fled. The crime was committed on August 12.

"Law enforcement officials who were in hot pursuit of the offender detained him several hours later," it said.

The police seized the knife with which the American is believed to have been killed. The suspect has confessed to committing the crime, it said.

The investigation is ongoing under Georgian Criminal Code Article 108 (premeditated murder).
