Over 20 ships, hovercraft and vessels of Caspian Flotilla start drills in Caspian Sea

MOSCOW. Aug 15 (Interfax-AVN) - A group of Caspian Flotilla ships have departed from the Zaton Zolotoi base in Astrakhan for bilateral qualification drills on the marine training grounds in the Caspian Sea, the Southern Military District press service said.

"Two marine brigades of the fleet formation comprising the frigates Dagestan and Tatarstan, corvettes Grad Sviyazhsk, Veliky Ustyug, Volgodonsk and Makhachkala, base and harbor minesweepers, and attached support vessels are engaged in the drills," the report seen by Interfax-AVN on Monday said.

According to the press service, more than 20 ships, hovercraft and vessels of the flotilla are participating in the exercises.

"The crews will have a series of missile and artillery-fire drills employing seaborne, coastal and airborne targets. Missile ships will fight surface ships of a simulated enemy during one of the drills' episodes, which will also involve aircraft of the Southern Military District," the press service said.

In addition to combat drills, the crews will practice en-route acceptance of supplies and fuel from support vessels.

"After the drills are over, the ship groups of the Caspian Flotilla will return to base in the ports of Astrakhan and Makhachkala," the report said.
