Russian Defense Ministry deems military cooperation with Armenia to be successful

YEREVAN (Armenia). Aug 16 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian military base in Armenia is a guarantee of stability in the Caucasus, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said after negotiations between the Russian and Armenian defense ministers.

"Successful functioning of the 102nd Russian military base is another indicator of the level of our allied relations," Antonov said.

The Russian-Armenian interstate commission dealing with the presence of the Russian military base in Armenia has been active, he said. "Its latest meeting was held in Yerevan in late July," Antonov said.

"The joint work plan of the Russian and Armenian defense ministries for the year 2016 is being been successfully implemented," he said.

"It includes over 40 events of various kinds, and 22 of them have already been held," the Russian deputy defense minister said.

Training of personnel for the Armenian Armed Forces was discussed at the meeting between Russian Defense Minister Gen. of the Army Sergei Shoigu and Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan.

"A total of 203 Armenian servicemen are being trained gratis at 24 schools of the Russian Defense Ministry at the moment. All of them are receiving quality education. We will admit another 211 students this year," Antonov said.

In the opinion of military commanders from the two countries, joint operative and combat training events have had significant practical value.
