LPR, DPR oppose deployment of intl peacekeeping force
MOSCOW. Aug 25 (Interfax) - Self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) negotiator Vladislav Deinego has reiterated the negative attitude of the Donbas republics to the proposal to deploy an international peacekeeping force in the region.
"Ukraine has proven in the past few weeks that it cannot be trusted and that it violates every possible agreement, especially those in the field of security. We are strongly opposed to the deployment of peacekeepers and any other foreign contingent, moreover that Kyiv is constantly breaching the truce," Deinego told Interfax.
The Defense Ministry of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) also thinks that the deployment of an international peacekeeping contingent to the region would be pointless.
"The situation in the republic's territory is fully under control. The only source of instability is Kyiv servicemen, who are violating the truce. Hence, the deployment of peacekeepers is not on the agenda. Besides, this is at odds with the Package of Measures, which requires the absence of foreign military formations in Donbas," he said.
The newspaper Izvestia said earlier with reference to a source in Ukrainian diplomatic circles that Ukraine was drafting a UN Security Council resolution which would send a UN peacekeeping mission to Donbas. Relevant documents have been prepared and will be submitted to the new secretary general of the United Nations upon his appointment. Ukraine also intends to raise the issue at the UN General Assembly session in New York in September. The newspaper said that Russia was ready to veto the Ukrainian initiative.
