Western Military District combat aircraft redeploying to tactical airfields as part of surprise check
MOSCOW. Aug 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Air force crews of Russia's Western Military District are preparing to redeploy to tactical airfields as part of an ongoing inspection of combat preparedness.
"The command of the 6th Air Force and Air Defense army, as well as a number of its forces and military units have been put on high alert. Steps are now being taken to build up combat-duty forces and means and cover the most important facilities by Air Defense units," the Western Military District said in a press release, seen by Interfax-AVN on Friday.
"Fighter jets are constantly patrolling the airspace over border districts," it said.
The surprise inspection of combat and mobilization preparedness was launched in line with the Russian Armed Forces supreme commander-in-chief's decision on August 25 in the forces of the country's Southern Military District, as well as some of the forces and means of the Western and Central Military Districts, the Northern Fleet, the Main Command of the Aerospace Forces and the Airborne Forces Command.
The check comes as part of preparations for the Caucasus 2016 strategic command and staff exercises and is due to be completed on August 31.
